Anime Genres 101: You Thought You Knew All Anime Genres? Think Again

A brief recap of what we have covered in Part 1!

Now let’s pick up where we left off.

HORROR

There will be very little easiness both to you and the main character. A plot specifically to make you always be on the edge of your chair. Dreadful atmosphere is vital in horror anime.

MYSTERY

Investigative storyline. Usually, the MC will be searching for answers or explanations for things – which mostly serve as the key to the main plot. It is not necessarily a detective anime, it can also be a supernatural or fantasy anime in which the characters try to find the ultimate answer to everything and how it happened.

ROMANCE

I guess no further explanation here. The word itself is self-explanatory. Don’t think that romance anime is girls’ anime. Some of the action and fantasy anime contain romance as well – even if it’s not significant… whatever, just let the girls daydream about the 2D guys because great real guys are scarce nowadays anyway.

SCI-FI

Often features advanced technologies and high-tech settings. For instance, the setting will be in future years; sometimes the advancement is something we never thought possible. Complete with cutting-edge scientific developments. Not all sci-fi animes are serious. There are some lighthearted and action-packed anime as well.

SPORTS

The anime will revolve around a sport for the plot. The most popular sports anime are basketball and baseball, with a few different anime about those sports. Sports anime often awakens your competitiveness whether you are/were an athlete or not. It simply boosts up your sportsmanship. Often stress on teamwork, determination, persistence, and hard work.

Pheww! Feels like the end, but it’s not! We just covered only the major genres! Have you found out which genres are the anime that you often watch? I guess it’s easier now to filter the genre when you’re browsing for new anime to be added to your watchlist.
