If you are new to the series, briefly, it’s an adaptation of a Webtoon with the same title by artist Sung So-jak. It was first published in August 2022 and became a big hit instantly on the webtoon platform named… well, Webtoon, due to its unique and satisfying plot. The Finale episode was released on September 2023 but was followed by a few Spin-Off episodes for the fans which then ended on November 2023.
For Those Who Didn’t Know
So, what makes it so unique and satisfying? It’s none other than about a fulfilled revenge by an oppressed person. Basically, the story is about Kang Ji-won, a working wife, and a cancer patient who married the love of her life – Park Min-hwan who turned out to be a big mama-boy who contributes absolutely nothing to their marriage. The bastard then dare cheating on her with her own best friend when she only had a few weeks to live. As if that’s not douched enough, he secretly took up a life insurance in Ji-won’s name and things led to another, HE KILLED HIS WIFE. With reasoning – “She’s gonna die anyway”.
Of course, that’s not the end. This is where the plot makes the webtoon so famous. It is when Ji-won suddenly woke up 10 years before the tragedy. Everything was the same as she remembered as if it was only yesterday. She vowed to herself to make things right and give everyone what they deserve – including making her best friend marry her ex-husband and suffer in her stead – *clear throat* With the help of a handsome boss… ehem!
Webtoon vs Drama Casting
Jumping into the bandwagon, I am one of the people who are not really satisfied with the choice of the cast.
Park Min-young as Kang Ji-won (heroine)
To be honest, at this rate, it’s boring to see her playing this kind of character. Most of her series are about a heroine that seems weak at first then turns out she has a secret side/life to her. It’s to the point where people can’t even differentiate which film is which with her in it.
But I applaud her tenacity in carrying this character. As a dying cancer patient, Kang Ji-won must have a very thin and sickly look. And Park Min-young understood the assignment. She lost 37kg just for the series. She went on a diet of drinking only ionized drinks which resulted in muscle mass reduction, hair loss, and constipation.
Na In-woo as Yoo Ji-hyuk (hero)
Yoo Ji-hyuk is the man of the story. He’s handsome, rich, cool, macho, tall, fit, cute, sexy, you name it. Every dreamy characteristic that women had ever dreamt of. The webtoon had single-handedly made him one of the best characters on the platform. Not to mention his chivalry, high tolerance, and understanding. Perfect is no longer an alien for a webtoon’s hero.
I like the actor Na In-woo. I also like the Na-triever of 2 Days 1 Night. What’s 2 Days 1 Night? It’s a Korean variety show that features 6 members spending 2D1N in a different place every week while promoting South Korea – and he’s one of the regular members.
For your information, Na In-woo’s nickname in the show is Na-triever as in Na In-woo + Golden Retriever. The other members coined him the nickname because he is so hyperactive and silly but extremely kind and affectionate, with his height and big features.
My point is, he was so bubbly and childish in 2D1N that he shocked viewers with his cool character of Yoo Ji-hyuk. While it may be impressive to be able to flip to another side from his true self, the character turns out rather awkward. Because he did not make it look natural. The character was supposed to be a macho, cool, and sexy man. But Na In-woo made him look cute with his loose suits (seriously what were the stylists thinking?)
Lee Yi-Kyung as Park Min Hwan (the ex-husband)
Park Min Hwan in the story is a mama-boy. Only goes to work because he had to have some pocket money to invest in his stocks and also to buy expensive things not for his wife, but for his mistress. He has a pretty face, but that’s all. Apart from that, he’s lazy and irresponsible. Never backed his wife up whenever his mother bullied her. Yeah, basically a douchebag. Not even that handsome in the webtoon *eyes rolling*.
However, there’s one part in the webtoon where some readers almost pity the husband after he gets what he deserves. Hence, a choice of an actor who could annoy yet charm viewers and question their moral stance is vital. Lee Yi-Kyung is not it. He’s cringy throughout the whole drama.
Maybe because Lee Yi-kyung’s role in Welcome to Waikiki is too impactful, with his silly TikTok upload, I could never get rid of his silliness. And he didn’t seem to shake those away during his acting as well. Instead of being annoying and a son of a b*tch character, he’s being silly and stupidly funny in the series. Which throws away the dire mood. Especially the scene when he killed his wife (not a spoiler).
Song Ha-yoon as Jeong Su-min (the bestfriend)
Jeong Su-min is the basic narcissistic manipulative b*tch that you read in any manga/manhwa/webtoon. Of course, no one can have it better than her, especially her own best friend. Anything Ji-won has, she has to get the exact same thing. Be it a crush, food, jewelry, or even a boyfriend. And let me tell you, she took them not in a good way.
I have liked Song Ha-yoon’s acting since Fight for My Way. She has a typical pick-me-girl face. Hence, I think that’s why the role suits her so much. Looking forward to seeing her in different roles.
Lee Gi-kwang as Baek Eun-ho & Choi Gyu-ri as Yoo Hee Yeon (the sides)
In the webtoon, Baek Eun-ho has that kind of vibe that what youngsters nowadays call ‘boyfriend-style. From the appearance, mainly. Pure style with doe-eyes. The eyes that will hug you like a blanket. With his height that fills the dream of a petite girl being a chin rest for him. I am actually a bit disappointed they chose Gi-Kwang as the crush. It feels so out of place. No hate on Gi-Kwang, I liked him ever since BEAST (idol group) became famous back then in 2013. It’s just that, not this time, boy. I’m sorry.
Yoo Hee Yeon is secretly my favorite character in the drama. She’s a blessing both in the webtoon and the drama. Really love the actress – Choi Gyu-ri. She doesn’t receive enough spotlight for this drama. She is the only person who made the webtoon character come out alive and real!
Drama Overall
Plotwise, the drama for me, is o…kay. Maybe because I knew what was going to happen since I read the webtoon, and some parts from the webtoon were not included. Of course, what do I expect, it’s an adaptation. But a part of me did anticipate something better than the webtoon – which rarely happens.
The scenes in the drama are beautiful. Some of the BGM are nice to hear. (quite disappointed with the wardrobe, actually). Somehow, the vibe of the drama is very different than the webtoon. I couldn’t shake the awkward and slow vibe when I watched the series. Since it’s kind of dark and fast-paced in webtoon. Let me know if you have the same feeling lingers.
If you are watching the drama without reading the webtoon beforehand, I can guarantee that you will love it.
However, if you ask me whether I will re-watch it again, I will say no. Of course, all the things that are said in this article are purely my opinion and view as K-Dramas AND webtoons lover. You are not obliged to agree or hate me for this. But if you are content with the drama, I hope you enjoy the series as much as I enjoyed the webtoon.
