This New Oppo Find X8 Pro Needs More Praises!

Oppo sent me a phone a couple of weeks ago, and I figured I could take it for a spin to see what it was capable of. I initially was not expecting any flagship phone at the end of the year, but it’s here. It’s a nice surprise though, and I can’t lie—after two weeks of using this phone—the Oppo Find X8 Pro might just be my new favourite.

I’m taking you on a quick adventure with my experience of using this phone for the past two weeks, highlighting all the pleasant little things and improvements I genuinely loved.

So let’s hop into it.

Unboxing Experience

Oppo Find X8 Pro.

Unboxing a phone is always a thrilling experience, and this one was no different. The “controlled friction” that creates a luxury feel for the unboxing experience is always a nice touch.

But for Oppo Find X8 Pro, it’s not just the unboxing experience. It’s what inside that counts.

The box contains the phone, a manual, a safety guide, a transparent phone casing, a sim ejector tool, and—to my delight—an 80W power brick and a USB data cable. You don’t see that often in phone packaging box nowadays.

When I saw it at first I went “Uuuu, nice”. A massive prop for Oppo for keeping their prospects happy.

I was not expecting to find a power brick in the phone packaging. I am glad to be surprised, though.

Maybe other smartphone companies should start taking notes and bring back power bricks. I know some of them detect third-party chargers and restrict fast charging capabilities from those chargers, so why not include their own chargers, no?

Let’s take a look at the phone itself:

Oppo Find X8 Pro – charging port, speaker, sim tray.

Oppo Find X8 Pro has plenty of things to look at on its body. The bottom part of the phone is where the speaker, USB-C charging port, and sim tray lie. Too bad the tray does not support micro-SD card slot, though, but with the 512GB storage on deck, I doubt I needed it.

Oppo Find X8 Pro – power button, volume button, and quick button.

On the right side of the phone, there are three distinct buttons – the power button, the volume button, and the quick button. I almost missed the quick button since it’s embedded almost indistinguishably from the main frame until I noticed a slight indentation when I was feeling around the phone.

The quick button is mainly used for launching the camera by double-pressing the button. It’s not technically a button; it’s a haptic sensor, and it produces vibrating feedback whenever a pressure (from my finger) is applied. It’s a similar feeling to that of Apple iPhone’s fingerprint sensor on iPhone 8/iPhone SE 2020. You can slide your finger on it to zoom in/out or to switch lenses, or hold and press the button to mimic a camera shutter button to take video or a picture. It’s a nice touch, really.

Oppo Find X8 Pro – An alert slider.

Now, on the left side of the phone, there’s only one thing to look at: an alert slider.

If there’s anything of design choice I applaud Apple for (until they removed it), it’s the side switch that mutes/unmutes or locks/unlocks the screen. Oppo Find X8 Pro, instead of a switch, uses a slider that turns all sound on/turn on vibration mode/mutes the phone completely.

I genuinely loved the alert slider. Sometimes I needed a quick access to mute my phone whenever I’m in public e.g. in a class or a lecture hall, so having the slider saved me from unlocking my phone to access the control centre. Props to Oppo for the design choice.

Oppo Find X8 Pro – antenna and speaker.

The phone is light, that much I can say. I’m used to holding full metal phones (iPhone SE 2020, Samsung S Ultra series) to the point I was expecting the phone to be heavy, too. It’s a nice change, considering that I often put my phone in my pocket, so a lightweight phone did my pants (and myself) some favour.

I’d like to touch on the camera bump, too. The camera bump on my personal phones sometimes sparks concern whenever I place them on a flat surface (worried that I might cause minor scratches).

The camera bump on Oppo Find X8 Pro is evenly placed. I wouldn’t say it’s not noticeable when you hold the phone, but the phone definitely wouldn’t wobble when placed on, let’s say, a dining table.

Oppo calls it “Cosmos Ring”. Considering the big circular frame surrounding all four camera lenses, I would say it does resemble the look of cosmos.

Display

This New Oppo Find X8 Pro Needs More Praises!
Oppo Find X8 Pro’s Infinite View display.

I noticed the phone screen has a slight curved glass on all four sides of the screen instead of just the right and left sides like Samsung once did with their phones. But it’s still considered a flat screen; there wasn’t any accidental touches on the side of the screen the entire time I was using it.

The curved edges are supposed to produce an “infinite view” display (think of an infinite pool). I didn’t really notice the infinite view when I was using it, but I did notice how comfortable it was to use the phone with the curved edges.

Oppo Find X8 Pro also boasts 4500 nits Peak Brightness and 2160Hz PWM Dimming. In other words, it is super bright but also cares very well for your eyes. The phone supports Dual Ambient Light Sensors (both front and back) and Adaptive Tone to automatically adjust colour temperature on the screen for a pleasing viewing experience.

It’s bright enough for me to watch YouTube videos under direct sunlight, that’s for sure. The phone also dimmed the screen a lot faster when the surrounding area was noticeably dark (e.g. late night in my bedroom), so I wouldn’t have to worry about getting “flash-banged” by the phone’s adjusting brightness.

I think I don’t give enough credits for the display of modern smartphones nowadays, and Oppo Find X8 Pro is no different. The colours are super rich and vivid, and I really liked viewing pictures and watching videos on this phone because of how distinguishable each of the colours can appear on the phone. It got mesmerising sometimes.

Camera

All right, let’s hop into the camera capabilities of Oppo Find X8. Oppo puts a heavy emphasis on telephoto lenses on this smartphone specifically, apparently. With the Hasselblad Master Camera System, the camera lenses and processing are definitely top-notch.

The phone boasts exclusive Dual Periscope Telephoto lenses, as well as AI Telescope Zoom for that extra zoom capabilities beyond the optical zoom offered. All four lenses are 50 megapixels, each with their own focal lengths—15mm ultra wide, 23mm wide, 73mm periscope, and 135mm periscope (or 0.5x, 1x, 3x, and 6x respectively).

Since Oppo Find X8 Pro focuses exclusively on zoom lenses (especially for portrait shots), I took the liberty of taking photos using these periscope lenses as much as I could, and the results are, often than not, really pleasant.

I’ll show you some samples below; you be the judge.

In general, I was, if not obvious already, very pleased with how the images turned out. If you followed me on the social media, every now and then I posted some pictures using this phone.

I took some photos using both wide lenses and the selfie camera too, and the results are just as good. Take a look:

The video can go up to 4K 60fps with four omni-directional microphones that can it can record stereo audio in both vertical and horizontal orientations, which is more than enough for daily vlogging and/or creating a video project.

I didn’t see any dedicated “portrait video” mode, but you can adjust the focal length of the video to create one. I’d say I was very pleased with how it turned out.

Portrait recording of myself.

There’s on thing I genuinely liked about Oppo’s camera system: there is no shutter lag. I could launch it quickly using the quick button, and snap a photo or take a video right away. Especially the photo-taking part—I can’t recall how many times I took multiple shots without realising it.

My phone still struggles with keeping up, especially when I take multiple portrait shots. So, having zero shutters when taking photos is such a blessing, especially on an Android phone.

Oh, there’s one more thing I noticed when using this phone.

More often than not I would notice some sort of delay when switching from the front camera to the back camera on my own phone. Sometimes when you’re recording for Snapchat or Instagram, or take video notes on WhatsApp/Telegram, switching from the front to the back camera is generally something you’ll see, and on iPhones, you won’t experience any delay when doing so.

Not on this phone, though. It’s just as snappy as the iPhones when doing the camera switch, and I was genuinely surprised. “Android smartphones are getting a lot better now”, I thought.

So yes, it’s such a pleasing experience to have these improvements here and there where it matters.

Performance

This New Oppo Find X8 Pro Needs More Praises!
Unboxing Oppo Find X8 Pro.

On Antutu Benchmark, the phone scored 2701287 in total, and 6479 on 3DMark.

Oppo Find X8 pro runs on a MediaTek Dimensity 9400 processor instead of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. You would think the phone would suffer slight performance issues since it’s not using the very much preferred Snapdragon, but I experienced the complete opposite.

The phone ran really well the entire time I was using it. And this was done after transferring all of the data from my personal phone to this one, mind you—so the phone had years of data from my phone on the get go. It still ran well without suffering from performance lags and/or stutters.

Not to mention switching between resource-intensive apps, too—I switch between PowerPoint notes and the camera app (to take pictures of the slides on the screen presented by my lecturers) every now and then, and not once did I experience the phone warming up or lagging.

Playing Burger Shop on Oppo Find X8 Pro, because I’m a casual gamer.

I’m not much of a mobile gamer myself, but I did play some casual and resource-intensive games such as Call of Duty: Mobile and Asphalt 9: Legends. Either of these games ran pretty smoothly without any stuttering or fluctuating frame rates, so you could pretty much throw whatever you want on this phone and it would still handle them perfectly.

Power of the AI processing power, I suppose. That’s what I’d like to see in a phone.

Battery

This New Oppo Find X8 Pro Needs More Praises!
Oppo Find X8 Pro with 80W SUPERVOOC charge.

Okay, this phone battery is insanely good. One full charge lasted me the whole day without needing to charge in between the day to last until bedtime.

I’m not joking.

My schedule is often busy throughout the day, and so I had very little time to charge my phone before I had to go out again. And often than not, I didn’t even bother charging with hopes that the phone would last.

The phone did tremendously well. I turned on the charging limit to cap it at 80%, and I still suffered no issues of the phone running out of battery before the day ended. This included all the things I was doing—taking pictures, open up notes, play some casual games, watch YouTube videos during lunch, texting for hours—

—and the phone still had juice for me to play music at night before sleeping.

I wouldn’t have to worry about the phone not having enough battery to last for the next day, too. With the 80W charger, I could just charge it as I took a shower in the morning, and the phone would be charged from almost 0% to 80% by the time I finished (roughly 30-45 minutes), ready to go for another day.

In essence, Oppo Find X8 Pro has a very, very, very good battery life. No doubt about that.

Notable Features

The phone runs on ColorOS 15, and it has so much improvements over the last software release. Apart from the visual overhaul, everything felt responsive and snappy. There are things that you see on iOS 16-18 present in ColourOS 15 as well (e.g. Dynamic Island and AI background remover), so you won’t miss out much if you are using an iPhone before. I appreciate the streamlined design, as it brings a cohesive and modern look, even if it means sacrificing some of the brand’s uniqueness.

I noticed there is also a feature where you could share files with iPhones on the ‘share’ tab. But in order to do so, your iPhone needs to install an app called O+ Connect beforehand.

Oppo Find X8 Pro is all about AI, too, so you can do things like “circle to search”, summarising notes and audio files, automatically writes things such as essays or summary reports, and using AI to enhance, blur, or remove objects in the background of your photos.

Oh, there is also an AI Studio to create digital images of yourself and others. Think of it like AI-generated pictures—you use your existing photos to re-create alternative looks to them.

I tried making a cartoon look of myself, but I deleted it because I found it to be a bit too jarring to use publicly. Maybe you are more open to the idea, but I am still somewhat reserved with it.

My Takes on Oppo Find X8 Pro

Holding the Oppo Find X8 Pro in my small hand.

I’m head over heels for this phone. The performance of this phone is unspeakable, the battery lasts longer than I have anticipated, the camera is insanely good, and the phone design looks really nice to me.

Granted, if I had RM5k on my hand, I’d probably get the same model myself (considering that this is a new flagship phone), but for now I’ll stick to my phone until it needs replacing.
