Usually, when you watch adventure anime like One Piece, The Seven Deadly Sins, Black Clover, etc., it will open the anime with the start of their adventure. The plot will then go on to unfold various encounters throughout their embarkment. The anime further exposes one-by-one scenes that help in character building.
The Beginning at The End
Well, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End uses a slightly different approach. It starts with the end of a decade of adventure by the Hero Party which consists of Hero Himmel, Warrior Eisen, Priest Heiter, and Mage Frieren. Together, they return to Royal Capital. The people celebrated them to the point of raising statues of them in the middle of the capital.
Frieren, the only elf with a long lifespan, separated ways with the other 3 heroes who decided to retire and some to commit to the common life of humans. After 50 years, Frieren is back to the Royal Capital to fulfil their promise to watch another Era Meteors, which only happens every fifty years.
Given that the other members are human, they have aged significantly to 50 years. Hero Himmel, the leader of the party, shortly passed away. The incident triggered regrets in Frieren as she is reminded how nonchalant she was during their journey. The other members seem to know a lot about her (human nature), whilst she knows very little about all of them, especially Hero Himmel. (Psstt… she has a thing for him)
Frieren is Special. Trust Me!
The anime is very unique in many ways. The subtle emotions of a poker face elf who cares and worries in her way. The way she tries to punish herself for the guilt she feels. The subtle way of her in protecting her new apprentices. The innocent ways she tries to learn more about human emotions and empathy. Everything is told and animated beautifully and elegantly.
The anime might be a slow burner, or even too slow for some. But surprisingly, every episode pulls our eyes to watch further. Maybe unconsciously we too, feel bad for Frieren for losing her party members one by one. Maybe we too, cheering Frieren in silence on her pursuit to compensate for what she has lost.
The story feels more emotional with the underlying use of year counts. Since human life is too short, it uses Hero Himmel’s death as the year transition instead of the actual years. For instance, it would show ’25 years after Himmel’s death’ or, ’27 years after Himmel’s death’, instead of ’25 years later’ or ‘Winter 2017’.
All in all, Frieren is worth watching. It gives you adventure, battles, magic, and a big part of a slice of life. Trust me on this. Go and watch the continuity of her journey with her new apprentices in Season 2!
