With the recent success of ‘Sheriff’, Astro Shaw doesn’t want to miss the hype train with The Experts in stealing the hearts of the local fans. With their popular cast and rarely-done heist theme, would it be enough for them to nail the theft mission? Let’s analyze their sting operation.
Before we start, in “The Experts,” it revolves around five siblings with unique skills reunite to execute a massive heist after their youngest brother is released from prison, only to find themselves entangled in a web of threats and betrayal. As they meticulously plan and carry out their most ambitious heist yet, they must navigate personal conflicts and external dangers to secure their future.
Strong Heist Theme
The movie checks every factor that made a heist movie rule. You know, the groovy funk music in the background, comedic scenes with perfect timings, twisty plots, and unchronological storytelling.
The point is the movie has that strong groovy heist vibe–the cinematography and editing match most of the heist movies made in Hollywood.
Fast-Paced Story
One strong factor of ‘The Experts’ is how fast the pace is. In your typical heist movie, the ‘sting operation’ usually starts around the climactic part of the film. Hollywood loves to take a huge chunk of the movies with recruiting the team members, building up characters, and preliminary missions.
However in ‘The Experts’, the grand heist starts as soon as the first act. The film leaves no room in wasting time. And if that made you worried about building up characters, don’t be. Because there are some scenes that create bonding moments among the siblings woven in the film. Regulated flashback sequences help as well.
Funny But Knows When to Get Serious
Comedy is the strength of the movie. Creating funny scenes is all about timings and build-up and the directors nail that part. We can safely say that every sibling in the movie has their own moment to shine with their comedic sides.
Regardless, the movie knows when to get serious. There are some scenes where the siblings need to have heartfelt conversations or the time where they need to show that villains are menacing. They didn’t ruin these serious scenes with premature jokes (I’m looking at you, Marvel).
Clean Plot But Nothing Exceptional
The plot of the movie is pretty good. We can safely say that there are no plot holes in this film. Every time you think you spot one, the flashback sequences will explain the reasonings.
Regardless, this movie lacks that ‘wow factor’–the thing that sets the movie apart from other heist stories. The sting operation is generic but not necessarily bad.
Conclusion
“The Experts” is a solid entry into the heist genre with its well-executed heist theme, fast-paced story, and balanced mix of comedy and serious moments. The movie excels in delivering a groovy, engaging experience, reminiscent of Hollywood’s best, while maintaining a uniquely local flavor. However, it does lack a distinct “wow factor” that could elevate it above other heist films.
