Across the Spider-Verse is a fun ride
After the success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 2018, everyone is asking Sony Animation Studios the same question, ‘can they make a sequel just as good?’. The answer is no – it’s better.
Spider-Man fans can rest assured that their beloved character is in the safest hands. This movie truly leaves you on the edge of your seat where the superhero is at the rock bottom, and the fans are excited to see what he’ll do in the sequel.
Characters
Let’s talk about all the Spider-Men. The amount of great in such a small amount of screen time makes you want more. Your eyes were feasted with the cool, anarchic Hobie Brown, the chirpy personality of Pavitr Prabhakar, all the way to the muscle-flexing Ben Reily, and more. Then we have the main villain of the story, The Spot, Spider-Man’s destined nemesis, or at least that what he claims, evolves from a goofy villain into a multiversal threat in 20 minutes of screen time.
Gwen Stacy shines a lot too – her origin story is explored and her story arc with her father resolved in the movie. But nothing prepares you for the appearance of Miguel O’Hara, Spider-man 2099. To say that he’s tall, dark and handsome is an understatement. He is intimidating, charismatic, and mysterious. Really different from other Spider People.
Regardless, no one can take the spotlight away from Miles Morales, the hero of the story. His story and struggles of being Spider-Man, juggling with his status as a student, a son, and a superhero is really inspiring.
Conflict
A great conflict in a story is when the audience were given a choice whether to save the life of your loved one..Or kill the entire universe. This is the question that one has to ask to be a Spider-Man. It truly shows that we are who we are today from the things that happened in the past, be it good or bad. Not to mention, the conflict that Miles is facing in this movie.
He wants to study the multiverse at the beginning of the movie because he wants a way to reunite with his friends, but later in the movie, he finds out that his friends choose not to visit him, due to him being a multiversal ‘anomaly’.
Animation
Since the first movie, the Spider-Verse movies are known for their unique animation and art style. Each universe has different art styles – and it really shows the diversity of the multiverse. Miles Morales’ universe just screams comic book style with its pop art style, intentional misprint style, and onomatopoeia words are shown during fight scenes.
Gwen Stacy’s universe bleeds in watercolor style that changes according to the emotion of the characters. Meanwhile, Vulture and Hobie Brown appear to be cut from paper mache and magazines and pasted into the movies. Sony continues to set trends for other animation movies like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and The Mitchells vs The Machines, that prefers the drawing art style rather than hyper-realistic approaches like Pixar and Disney animated movies.
Music
The original scores by Daniel Pemberton and songs by Metro Boomin are incredible. The songs like Annihilate, Am I Dreaming, and Hummingbird fit well into the movie. That part at the beginning of the movie when Gwen talks to the audience that she lied to Miles, the score ‘Across the Spider-Verse Intro’ by Daniel Pemberton absolutely builds up the tension and the mysteriousness of the scene.
And that fight scene where Miles fights the Spot where he should be meeting his parents and teacher, the score ‘My Name Is… Miles Morales’ also by Daniel Pemberton absolutely encapsulates the adrenaline, the rush, and the goofiness of the fight. And of course, how can we forget Miguel O’Hara’s theme song that has gone viral on Tiktok thanks to the ‘Canon Event’ memes.
Final Score
In a nutshell, watching this movie has truly been one heck of a ride. It ends with a cliffhanger ending and the fans are excited to know how this trilogy ends in ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’. But for now, we’d like to give this movie a rating of 8.5/10.
