8 Reasons to Love ‘Kaiju No. 8’

As someone who follows the ‘Kaiju No. 8’ manga, I was really surprised when they announced the anime adaptation back in 2022. It was mainly because there weren’t many chapters available for adaptation at that time. This raises the question: what makes the studio so eager to adapt this manga as soon as they can? Let’s find out.

**Beware, mild spoilers ahead. 

#1: Not an Attack on Titan Ripoff

No, this is not a shameless AoT rip-off. While Kabaneri may share similarities with Attack on Titan, ‘Kaiju No. 8’ distinguishes itself. Yes, both protagonists can transform into humanoid monsters, but that’s where the similarities end. If anything, ‘Kaiju No. 8’ fits more into Pacific Rim’s aesthetic.

Unlike Attack on Titan, ‘Kaiju No. 8’ has a more comedic vibe. It may not delve deeply into lore, but it offers a fun, lighthearted story that you can simply sit back and enjoy.

#2: Not Your Usual Protagonist

The traits of anime protagonists are so common that they can be easily identified. For example, 15 years old, around 174cm tall, loud, loves to eat, and dumb most of the time are characteristics shared by numerous protagonists.

Which is why it was refreshing to see Kafka Hibino as a protagonist in ‘Kaiju No. 8.’ He’s nearly 30 years old and has to work very hard to keep up with his much younger allies… without crying (I’m looking at you, Deku).

#3: Monster Mayhem

Moving on to another aspect that makes ‘Kaiju No. 8’ stand out: the gripping and explosive fight scenes. Each arc serves city-scale destruction, with battles between the Anti-Kaiju Force and the monsters being bone-shattering and leaving enormous shockwaves for each punch. The battles are both exhilarating and tense, making us worry if our favourite heroes will survive the war.

#4: Amazing Art Style

Let’s now discuss another aspect of ‘Kaiju No. 8’ that contributes to its appeal: the captivating art style. One thing that keeps me motivated to stay updated with the manga is the art style. I really adore how well-drawn each panel is; the drawings are detailed and clean, depicting the sheer coolness of every scene very effectively.

However, I still believe that the anime doesn’t faithfully adapt the art style of the manga. But it’s too early to make a final judgment on the anime’s adaptation.

#5: Unexpected Original Soundtrack

Another surprising aspect of ‘Kaiju No. 8’ that adds to its appeal is the unexpected choice of artists for the opening and ending theme songs. They got OneRepublic and Yungblud to perform the opening and ending theme songs! Who would’ve guessed? Both tracks are fantastic additions to the series.

#6: Mysteries

Now, let’s delve into another captivating aspect of ‘Kaiju No. 8’: the intriguing mysteries that drive the narrative forward. As of writing this article, the manga consists of 106 chapters, making it a relatively young series. Yet, we still don’t know the origin of Kafka’s abilities or what the kaijus are really planning. The mysteries surrounding Kafka’s abilities and the true intentions of the kaijus are what keep readers eagerly anticipating each new chapter. 

#7: Memorable Characters

Moving on to another aspect that adds depth to ‘Kaiju No. 8’: its cast of memorable supporting characters. Each of them is well-developed with its own backstory, struggles, and conflicts. In fact, some readers find these characters even more compelling than the protagonist, Kafka himself.

#8: Breathtaking Battlesuits

Finally, let’s explore the captivating element that sets ‘Kaiju No. 8’ apart: the breathtaking battlesuits worn by the characters. In ‘Kaiju No. 8’, the characters’ suits and weapons are crafted from the monsters they defeat. Some suits have cryokinesis, extra limbs, and even predict the movements of the kaijus.
