Don’t get me wrong. The anime is lovely! Regarding the title, My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 – fans call it Yamada-kun to Lv999 for short (to as in と= and). You guessed it, it’s because it’s too long, and also because the Japanese name is Yamada kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru. But never mind, we know that the longer the title is, the more interesting the anime is (but not all the time).
Swoon-worthy Lv999
The anime appeared when viewers needed a rom-com after a long time of the absence of good rom-com anime. Lucky us, it is swoon-worthy.
The plot is set in a familiar environment. A female college student named Akane got cheated on by her boyfriend with an in-game friend. What hurts more is that she only played the RPG game called Forest of Savior (FOS) just to be a sporting girlfriend who supports her boyfriend’s hobby. Long story short, the break-up leads her to meet Yamada, a professional FPS gamer who turned into an RPG game for a quick cool down.
**FPS games mean First Person Shooter. Examples of FPS games are; Valorant, Counter Strikes, PUBG, Halo, Apex, etc.
Gaming Influence Lv999
It happens every time we watch a gaming anime. It makes us want to play an RPG as well. It makes us want to hang out with our guild members as well. But the reality is, RPG players are usually toxic, not to mention super serious guild members that only prioritize goals rather than making friends. It’s very hard to establish amiable friendships with guilds created off of strangers.
However, I could suggest some RPG games where you MIGHT have a chance to meet friendly players on the same servers.
- Tree of Savior: It’s the game that the anime is referring to! But, you can only play this game on a PC.
- Ragnarok Origin Global: It’s actually created by the same developer of Tree of Savior. If you would like to try a game similar to FOS (in the anime), this is the game you should play. Its chibi and quirky characters resembled each other. It’s available on mobile as well.
- Genshin Impact: Most players are very kind in guiding you throughout the domains and vast maps. You won’t have a guild, but there is a co-op mode where you can join or invite random players for help. Once you find a click, you may add the other player as a friend and establish a friendship.
- Stardew Valley: This is a chill game, so people are rather chill in this game. Hence, less toxic community (not 0% toxic ya!)
Why Patience Lv999?
I hate to break it to you but the manga is not yet finished. It’s currently in Chapter 107 (as of 18 Apr 2024) and it hangs readers on the first conflict between Yamada and Akane that comes from Yamada’s jealousy. Okay, spoiler alert, Akane got jealous a lot before this current arc. It’s the arc where Yamada meets Akane’s family and a childhood friend – who is yes, who has had feelings for Akane since they were little.
What makes it frustrating is, the manga is being updated inconsistently! Sometimes you will get 1 chapter in 2 months! Oh, my heart. The torture that the author put us. Sometimes there might be 2 chapters in a month and when you thought things were finally looking good, you were left for another 3 months. Just when it’s getting interesting and pillow-hugging.
So, yes. Don’t start if you don’t have patience Lvl 999. It’s torture to wait once you have fallen in love. Hope sure is a painful blessing. To those who have already been hooked like me, don’t worry guys! This proves that we are loyal – to Yamada who is a walking green flag, and also to Akane who feels like a sister that we want to always root for.
