Guardian of the Galaxy
After years of delay, scandal, and drama, Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy finally concludes itself in the best way possible.
Marvel has really gone through a lot after Avengers: Endgame. Poor critics receptions, low viewerships, and controversial actors. With all hopes seeming to be lost, James Gunn appears and makes one of the best Marvel movies ever. So what makes this movie great?
Characters
Rocket has the spotlight in this movie. His tragic background is revealed for the first time and it makes the fans love him even more. Meanwhile, Drax and Mantis are an incredible comedy duo. It’s really refreshing to see a male and a female character that aren’t each other’s love interest. And who can forget about Nebula, whose character arc spans from the first Guardians movie until Avengers: Endgame.
She went from a villainous character into a family-oriented person. Regardless, the main character of this series, Peter Quill, has the most satisfying lesson in this movie. After losing the ones he loved, he realizes that he left someone else who loves him. In the end, he leaves space shenanigans and returns to his grandfather to be by his side.
Action
The action sequence in this movie is cool – and funny too. The battle at OrgoCorp, Counter-Earth, and High Evolutionary’s ship. They’re all great and the visual effects are awesome too. But the one action sequence that is absolutely incredible is the one-shot hallway fight scene in High Evolutionary’s ship with face-paced music being played in the background. Every member of the Guardians is in there but everyone gets a moment to show their individual skills and team work at the same time. You can never go wrong in a fight scene with these two things; ‘hallway’ and ‘one-take’. You can ask Charlie Cox’s Daredevil.
Music
Good music is not a stranger when it comes to James Gunn. His other works like Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad, music isn’t only used to make a scene cooler, but it is a story-telling technique used by James Gunn. The first scene of this movie starts with the melancholic melody of ‘Creep’ by Radiohead. This music is just basically James Gunn telling the audience, ‘you’re gonna cry in this one’. And then, ‘No Sleep till Brooklyn’ by Beastie Boy is played in a hallway fight scene in High Evolutionary’s ship. That choice of song absolutely encapsulates the sheer coolness of the fight choreography. And lastly, ‘Dog Days Are Over’ by Florence + the Machine is played at the end of the scene. The song’s melody really emphasizes the bittersweet ending of the movie. It accurately represents how the audience feels at the end of the movie, happy and sad.
Ending
An ending is something that Marvel movies usually lack. Everytime a Marvel movie ends, it doesn’t feel like an ending. It feels like a setup to an upcoming project, especially in the post credit scenes. However, in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, it really feels like the end of an era. The Guardians are disbanding. Each member finds their next purpose. The character arcs are completed.
The movie starts with a depressing song but ends with a happy song. It’s a symbol that although it’s a goodbye, it doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be sad. Sometimes we need to let go of the past and embrace the future. That is what the movie is all about. And the post credit scenes don’t set up an upcoming project. A new lineup of Guardians of the Galaxy is shown and Peter is eating cereal with his grandfather. Nothing big.
Now that James Gunn has left Marvel for good and becomes the co-CEO of the rival company DC, Marvel just lost an asset there. With the declining quality of movies and series since Endgame, Marvel needs to watch its back and focus on quality rather than quantity. Regardless, as a superhero fan, it is exciting to see what the future holds for both Marvel and DC. But for now, we’re giving the Guardians a rating of 9/10.
