When ‘The Beekeeper’ trailer was released, people expected that the movie is all about Jason Statham beating the bad guys with lots of bee puns. And when they watched the movie, it was exactly like that… but better. Bee-lieve it.
Unintentionally Funny
The movie is about a good ol’ revenge story. Adam Clay’s friend committed suicide after a criminal organization scammed her, stealing all of her money in a phishing syndicate. Now, he’s out for revenge.
Jason’s character, Adam Clay, is serious. Brooding all of the time. However, considering the movie’s plot, it is unintentionally funny to watch.
Adam Clay is an ex-agent of a secret organization called the ‘Beekeepers’. To enjoy his retirement age, he became a beekeeper. At one point, he even burns a person with honey as fuel. Adam talks in bee metaphor a lot. He talks about ‘protecting the hive’ and ‘replacing the queen of the hive’. Even his enemy once said, “to bee, or not to bee”. It’s really hilarious when people say this with serious faces. It’s so corny, it’s good.
It Bee-comes Serious In No Time
Let’s just say that the movie is a classic action movie. It’s pretty entertaining. The fighting choreography is good and the violence is a chef’s kiss. What he did to the bad guys made the audience say, “yup he deserves that”.
But the best part of this movie is that it escalates very quickly. When Adam’s friend committed suicide that night, in the next day he simply walks into the bad guys’ front door, bathe them in gasoline, and straight-up burn the place down. No time wasted.
And at the end of the movie? It is revealed that the boss of the criminal organization is a spoiled brat whose mother is the president of the United States! The final act is all about Adam Clay beating up gangsters, the FBI, and the Secret Service at the same time. It’s crazy.
Will It Bee a Franchise?
Oh come on, every studio wants a franchise these days. Of course ‘The Beekeeper’ will too. In all seriousness, the ‘Beekeeper’ organization reminds me a lot of the ‘League of Shadows’ from ‘Batman Begins’ – an agency who operates outside of jurisdiction to expose a corrupted society and fix it in a way they believe is deserved.
There’s a lot of things to explore with the lore in sequels. What if the Beekeepers decided Adam Clay is too corrupted with vengeance? Following the movie’s ending, what if the United States declared war on the Beekeepers? What if the Beekeeper members fight each other because of the organization’s unethical and vigilantism method? There’s so many things to talk about.
Our Rating, What Will It Bee?
It’s not a masterpiece but it’s far from a bad movie. If you pay to watch this in the theater, it is definitely worth every penny. Cool action, awesome violence, good ol’ revenge stories with bee puns. With that, we rate this movie as 6.5 out of 10.
