Wes Ball, the director of this movie, has a huge burden. Because the modern ‘Planet of the Apes’ trilogy (2011-2017) was perfect. The last installment of the trilogy seemed to be the perfect conclusion. Therefore, to release a new movie seems like a really risky move. Did it pay off? Let’s find out.
The Wonders of the ‘Kingdom of The Planet of The Apes’
The worldbuilding of this movie is incredible. It is wonderful how the future generations of apes reacted to Caesar’s life story. Some see him as a prophet, where his followers study and live lives as Caesar did, like not killing other apes, united as one, and studying human languages to acquire knowledge.
Some twisted Caesar’s words to fit their agenda–forming a ruthless and tyrannous kingdom. This new ape kingdom invades, conquers, and enslaves other ape clans throughout the movie.
And some just don’t care about Caesar’s words and just live in the middle of the jungle to train some eagles.
This new world of apes, where generations have passed since Caesar’s death, seems like a mirror of our own. The writers have brilliantly implied the price for human intelligence and sentience. The same intelligence that made humans and apes survive for so long is also responsible for them to find more brilliant and brutal ways to invade, enslave, and conquer. It is a clever philosophical nod from the writers.
The Flaws of the ‘Kingdom of The Planet of The Apes’
Now I want to talk about something that I don’t particularly like from the movie. It’s not exactly bad, but I just wish the writers would choose a different approach to continue the story.
In the climactic scene of ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’, the protagonist was finally able to track his clan only to find out that they were enslaved by a brutal regime that wanted to exploit their labor. The protagonist sparked a rebellion and found a way to free his clan. Sounds similar? That’s the exact plot of ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’.
It seems like the studio is repeating the same formula. And if that’s not enough, the plan of the villainous apes in this movie is acquiring ‘human weapons’ to achieve complete dominance over ‘humans’. That is strikingly similar to the plot of ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’.
The Future of The ‘Kingdom of The Planet of The Apes’
In case you don’t know, the creators of this movie, Silver and Jaffa, stated the modern ‘Planet of the Apes’ franchise is planned to consist of nine movies– we are now at the fourth movie.
If nine movies are planned, we can safely assume that we are getting three sets of trilogies. We’re done with the first trilogy and we are now entering the second trilogy.
The first trilogy deals with the origin of how apes gained dominance over humans. The virus that made apes smart, nearly extinguished humanity and made the rest of human survivors less intelligent and mute.
We are done with this story in the first trilogy. Which is why I expect them to strip away any intelligent humans from the second trilogy. I wish the second trilogy focuses entirely on the new ape civilizations, generations after Caesar’s death. I want to see different ape clans struggle to survive with their different values, beliefs, and heck, why not religions?
And for the third and last trilogy? I wish the apes were now fully civilized. Completely bipedal, fully clothed, and completely established political systems. This is the trilogy where it should focus on the story from the original novel by Pierre Boulle, “La Planète des singes (1963)”. You know, where the humans thought they traveled to another planet but it turns out it was the future version of Earth? I believe the third trilogy should focus on that.
With each trilogy having so many differences from each other and the fact that the last trilogy ends where the original novel started, ‘Planet of the Apes’ should be one of the most incredible movie franchises ever made.
The Conclusion of The Review of The ‘Kingdom of The Planet of The Apes’
We talked about the flaws and how the direction of the movie should’ve been. But are the great elements of the movie enough to mask it? Yes, more than enough!
Every single character is incredible and lovely. The villains are charismatic. The CGI effects are perfect. The writers are not pulling their punches. The story is dark and brutal but can get humorous and wholesome whenever it needs too.
With that, we rate this movie as 6.5 out of 10!
